OCTOBER IS PASTOR APPRECIATION MONTH

Did you know that October is Pastor Appreciation Month?  Some suspect that it is a holiday that that was established by Hallmark, but in actuality the celebration began in 1992 as “Clergy Appreciation Month” with a mission of uplifting and encouraging pastors, missionaries and religious workers.  We are privileged to have a wonderful pastor and a faithful staff.  We are thankful for the leadership that Pastor Jeff provides and for the beautiful ministry of the entire staff… both those who have been with us for some time and those who have recently joined the staff.  Please take a few moments over the coming days to express your appreciation to Pastor Jeff, and to Jori, and to our staff.  I was recently struck by the words of leadership guru Peter Drucker who said, “Over the years I have made a career out of studying the most challenging management roles out there. After all of that I am now convinced the two most difficult jobs in the world are these—one, to be President of the United States, and two, to be the leader of a church.”  Pastor Jeff, thank you for answering God’s call!

ALL SAINTS DAY

Our All Saints Day Gallery is up in the North Alcove, on display for the Anniversary Celebration and a few weeks in November.

CHOIR

Choirs have a wonderful history at Glen Ellyn Covenant Church.  We are forming a choir to help lead music in worship on Sunday, November 7th.  Rehearsals for this will be held after worship – the Sunday School hour – on Sundays, October 24 and 31. We will meet in the sanctuary and sit somewhat distanced from one another.

Email me if you have questions, etc.

Dear GCOV Family and Friends,

After much prayer and discernment, the 75th anniversary committee has decided to postpone our November 6th dinner celebration. At the heart of the decision was a desire to have our whole church family present, which we knew would not happen under current circumstances. While we know it is impossible to put on an event with 100% participation, we would still like to have as many as possible of those who desire to be there. At the RSVP cut off, we had less than half our members and regular attenders tell us they would be present. We also had requests from long-time members that we postpone. While we know this is disappointing for us, we ask that you do four things:

1.      Please pray. Pray that our church continues (as it has for 75 years) to follow Jesus no matter the cost. That we would not, for even one second, turn our eyes away from his beautiful face or our ears from God’s Word.

2.      Please bear patiently with us as we all journey together during a time of constant change and moments of disappointment. As Christians, our love of Christ is proven in our response to various circumstances.

3.      Come to church on Sunday, November 7th! We are still celebrating our church’s 75th anniversary on this Sunday. We will have a guest preacher from our past, we will have an extended coffee time and food outside (rain or shine), and we will bury a time capsule on the church property to remind a future generations at GEECC of God’s faithfulness!

4.      Get super excited for when we do have our celebration dinner in the Spring or next Fall!

If you have any questions, please contact anyone on the 75th anniversary committee.

Sincerely,
The 75th Anniversary Committee:

AN INVITATION TO RESPOND USING ALL WORSHIP ARTS

In anticipation of our 75th anniversary celebration, we artists need to have a response to God's faithfulness yesterday, now and forever...[the theme].  Since some of our founders were artists themselves, we stand on very strong shoulders. We have a responsibility to carry on our mission as artists in the church to proclaim God's Glory and His marvelous works as well as what the Holy Spirit is proclaiming through us using our gifts in the arts.

As a way of providing inspiration, we will look to Psalm 75.  It is only 10 verses and covers a multitude of topics.  Please meditate on it. If you only want to focus on the first couple of verses, that is good as well.  Let the Holy Spirit inspire you to respond to God's word in Psalm 75.   For the visual artists, please work as large as you are able, since our gallery is in the sanctuary for this celebration.  I would like to begin hanging your artwork in October, or before.  All work of "Living in the Resurrection" will be taken down in October.  Thank you all for your participation and your willingness to allow your work to be displayed throughout these long months of the pandemic.  They were wonderfully hopeful and healing!

We also have thought of the hymn "Now Thank We All Our God" as a theme song that was written from Psalm 75.  You may use that as well for inspiration. All of the arts are welcome; dance, poetry, visual, music etc.  Let your imagination soar!

Thank you for considering participating in this all congregation celebration!  Your work adds to the whole response and we will all be blessed by your gift!
If you have any questions, contact Kriste Sveen.

DO YOU LOVE COFFEE?

WE NEED YOUR HELP ON THE FIKA COFFEE TEAM!

What is Fika?  Its a Swedish word, pronounced: Fee-ka.   Fika is often translated as "a coffee and cake break", which is kind of correct, but really it is much more than that.

Fika is a concept, a state of mind, an attitude and an important part of Swedish culture. It means making time for friends and colleagues to share a cup of coffee (or tea) and a little something to eat.   We haven't added the 'cake' yet but we are working on that

Please email Annalyssa (annalyssa.manning@gecovenant.org)  if you are interested in making and serving coffee on a Sunday morning.  It's fun and super easy.  We'll teach you everything you need to know!  We are hoping to put together a team and rotate each week so you only have to do it once or every other month, depending on how many people sign up.

If you have questions contact Andrea Martin (abmartin@ameritech.net).

CCECC Call to Prayer

Dear Friends of the Central Conference (CCECC),

I am inviting you, the people of God, to join the Central Conference for a time of fasting and praying on Mondays in the month of September. You will find prayer requests in the flyer shared in this email.

We will conclude our time of fasting every Monday, with a short time of prayer, which we will do in community. Through September 27, we will gather online on Monday evenings at 5:00 p.m. (CST) for those who can join us.

Below is the Zoom meeting information to participate in this time of prayer. You are welcome to share the link with your congregation. I am also sharing a downloadable flyer (in English) and another in Spanish/Espanol, which you can also pass along to the members of your church.

I look forward to seeing you on Monday evening.

In Christ,

Pastor Danny

Rev. Danny Martinez

Superintendent of the CCECC

We also have thought of the hymn "Now Thank We All Our God" as a theme song that was written from Psalm 75.  You may use that as well for inspiration. All of the arts are welcome; dance, poetry, visual, music etc.  Let your imagination soar!

Thank you for considering participating in this all congregation celebration!  Your work adds to the whole response and we will all be blessed by your gift!

In Christ,

DO YOU ‘COFFEE’?
