The Ark Preschool
LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS
WEEKS OF SEPTEMBER 14 & 24

The Ark Preschool is gearing up for our first week of school.  The first couple of weeks can be a big adjustment for our little ones, especially those in the younger classes as it may be their first time away from their parents.

We’re looking for volunteers to help in the classrooms during the first two weeks of school, the week of September 14th and 21st.  Your extra support will help our teachers and, most importantly, help the children feel safe, and comfortable as they learn to navigate their new classroom routines.

If you’re interested in volunteering, please let me know your availability. We’d love to have you join us and
help make the start of the school year a smooth and welcoming experience for the children!

GEECC BOOK CLUB IS BACK!
wednesday september 9 at 7pm

The Glen Ellyn Evangelical Covenant Church Book Club is a friendly, inter-generational group that usually meets the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 7pm. Meetings are held at various member’s homes throughout the year. Host homes provide light refreshments, followed by prayer and an informal discussion. The Discussion Leader provides information about the author, along with a few questions to get the discussion started. You are asked to RSVP to the host so she can prepare accordingly.

Come join us on Wednesday September 9 at 7pm at the home of the Bischoff’s for our first meeting of the season. The book choice for the year will be discussed and decided upon at this meeting, so bring your suggestions—and invite a friend or a neighbor!
Call the church office for details

OUR COMMUNITY GARDEN
A NOTE FROM DIANE BROWN

The next time you are in the parking lot at church, face west and take a look at an area where Gather-Grow-Go is in full swing! It is the Community Garden where church family, neighbors, and refugee friends GROW veggies (and flowers) GATHER their harvest, and well, GO home with their produce.

As one of the Plot Managers, I can say that the Community Garden is a great place to extend a welcome to people you don’t know. For example, last summer, a neighbor on a walk spied the garden and contacted the church to see if she could get a plot. Yes! There was one available! I met with her, showed her the ropes, and since then we’ve had several conversations while gardening together.

This year, I got a late start on planting, but the weeds wasted no time! A member of the Falam Christian Church of Chicago, which meets at GEECC each week, saw the ‘empty’ plot and asked if they might garden it. I welcomed this family to use 3/4 of the plot, which they weeded and farmed, while I used the remaining portion of the plot to care for my 3 tomato plants and 4 pepper plants. Here, too, I’ve enjoyed some very nice conversations with my “share croppers”.

I have a little sign in my flower garden—one I took from my family home
some 50 years ago;

The kiss of the sun for pardon
The song of the birds for mirth,
One is nearer God’s heart in a garden
Than any place else on earth

I don’t know if that is absolutely true, but I do know that God walks
in the Community Garden
and blesses it with His presence.
