Holy Crutons!

Last Sunday some of you may have picked up croutons that I called “Holy Croutons”. These croutons are made from leftover communion bread. Because the bread has been blessed, we don’t just throw away what is leftover, but we either return them to the earth by feeding them to ducks or other wild animals; OR, we can reconstitute the bread into CROUTONS!

Holy Croutons!

We are looking for people to help with the SET Up and CLEAN UP of weekly Communion.

OR perhaps you would like to provide bread for a Sunday.

Would you consider joining part of the group that prepares the sacred meal of our Lord that we share together in each Sunday’s worship service? We will teach you how to be involved in this wonderful ministry of Communion.

See Leslie, Peter Johnson, Meg Tillman, or one of the Pastors if interested.

BARBEQUE AT THE ROOTS!

WEDNESDAY NIGHT BARBEQUES will resume next week, August 9th 5-7pm. Bring your meat to grill, a side dish to share. and enjoy the summer evening together!

The final one of the Summer will be Wednesday, August 16th.

MEET JOSEPH SAWYER, OUR NEW DIRECTOR OF STUDENT MINISTRY!

Hey Y’all! My name is Joseph, and I am from Holland, MI. I love grilling out, Chicago sports, playing catch with the frisbee, and Billy Joel.

I grew up going to the local church Youth Group and participating in Young Life. I attended a gap year program post-High School, and that was when I knew I wanted to follow Jesus. After College, I hit the workforce doing a wide variety of jobs. Summers were spent working at a camp called HoneyRock, where I could build relationships, spend time with others, and talk about the Gospel. It was during that time that I knew I wanted to live a life of ministry.

This past year, I went back to the gap year I attended at HoneyRock to work with eighteen High School graduates as a Program Coordinator for Wheaton College.

I am super excited to join Glen Ellyn Covenant Church and be a part of this incredible community!

Welcoming Rev. Dr. Tuisem Shishak and Zingrin Shishak This Sunday
We are looking forward to hearing from Rev. Dr. Tuisem (“Tui”) Shishak and his son Zingrin Shishak, both affiliated with Patkai Christian College in Nagaland, India, this coming Sunday, July 2.

Rev. Dr. Shishak founded Patkai Christian College in Nagaland in 1974. Since then, the school has trained more than 7,000 Christian leaders and has become one of the top colleges in India. The Lord has worked powerfully through this ministry. Our church supported Tui for many years until he retired a few years ago. Many of us have enjoyed praying for his family and work.

Longtime Glen Ellyn Covenanters may remember that Tui’s late wife, Margaret, served as our church musician for some time and helped launch Patkai’s School of Music. Zingrin studied at Wheaton College, received a graduate degree in piano pedagogy, and currently serves as Dean of the School of Music at Patkai.

Tui and Zingrin will share an update during worship this Sunday. Please take time to greet them afterwards during coffee time in Higher Grounds. The Missions Committee plans to host a lunch for them Sunday afternoon. If you would like to join us to learn more about their ministry, please contact missions@gecovenant.org or Darren Miller.

What is the Pastor-Staff Relations Committee?

The Pastor-Staff Relations Committee is a group of church members who function as a bridge between members of our staff and members of our congregation. Our purpose is to provide support, appreciation, and encouragement to every one of our staff members. Each committee member is the liaison to specific staff members and seeks to build trusting, collaborative relationships with them through regular contact to support and encourage them in their area of ministry.

If needed, the staff person has a PSRC member they already know and trust to discuss challenges in their work responsibilities, with another staff member, or with members of the congregation. The PSRC may also be asked to share suggestions or concerns brought by church members with individual staff members in a way that is constructive and collaborative. All matters are addressed promptly and confidentially.

The committee advises the Leadership Team on HR policies, maintains the Staff Handbook, and works with the Financial Management Team on employee benefits. The PSRC also invites church members to contribute to the Staff Appreciation Gift during the holidays and determines the distribution of the money collected.

The committee consists of Pastor Jeff Root as our Head of Staff, Church Vice Chair Will Casey, and three elected members: Paul Bischoff, Bunny Mirrilees, and Chair Jana Goetz.

Prayer Support for Summer Camps

Summertime holds potential for fun and meaningful camp experiences for children, youth, leaders, and volunteers alike. From Covenant Camps in the Midwest, with members of our church family and others attending and serving, to Akagi Bible Camp in the mountains of central Japan, where our ministry partners Jim and Hydi are involved, camps are places where our lives may be enriched together. Let’s remember in prayer these summer camps and all those participating.

More specifically, in a recent message from Beth Fredrickson of Harbor Point Ministries she invites us to pray for the year-round and summer staff who will be ministering to children, youth, and families this summer. In signing up as Prayer Partners we will be offered a weekly newsletter with updates and prayer prompts. Camp posts on Instagram and Facebook may be followed as well. Summer Camp 2023 Prayer Partners may sign up here. Jim and Hydi invite us to pray as well for another great camping season at Akagi Bible Camp.
